Saturday harbor ride

It was warmer, but still slightly chilly early on. The sun glared in the eastern sky. On San Andreas, the pack split after Buena Vista, and I was near the back of the second pack. There was enough horsepower at the front of the second pack to keep the first pack close, and might have caught the tail end of the first pack not far after the bridge before the end, but I couldn't tell, being buried at the end of the pack.

After the long and short route riders split off, there were only six of us left doing Hazel Dell. I got dropped on the descent and soloed into Corralitos, then went slowly over Hames with 3 others, then continued with them on Freedom and Soquel rather than taking Day Valley, Valencia, and Trout Gulch as I usually do when riding alone.

Saturday harbor ride

It was mostly sunny and very cool. It was still cloudy enough that the sun wasn't in my face when heading east. Since Sea Otter was this weekend, there had to have been fewer riders, but it didn't seem too different to me.

At Bonita and San Andreas, a big black pickup was passing by and then stopped, causing the turn to be slow. There was not the usual big jump. It may have been due to the truck, but the first riders had already made the turn, so it's probably due to the big engines being off to the races at Sea Otter. There was probably a tailwind, but I never noticed. On the flat after the climb after Buena Vista, a gap formed ahead. I was on the wheel of two Giant Strawberry riders who tried to close it, going by several other riders, but it kept growing. Pretty soon, I had to drop off and there was nobody behind me, so I soloed the rest of San Andreas and part of Beach. On Beach, a group of 4 went by, so I hopped onto the end of that train until we rejoined the main group.

I took the Hazel Dell option in a group of 16 or so. The pace on Casserly and the first part of Mt Madonna was pretty slow. The group split up on the steep run-up to Hazel Dell, so I wound up somewhere in the middle. About 3/4 of the way to the summit, a pair of riders blew by. I could still see them at the first few curves of the descent, and then they were gone. This time, nobody overtook me on the descent, so I didn't get any drafting help on the way to Corralitos.

I headed over Hames, Day Valley, Valencia, and Trout Gulch, and started getting a headwind. On Soquel, coming out of Aptos, the headwind started coming in sporadic gusts, which continued the rest of the way. On Water heading into downtown, the wind was briefly a tailwind. On High St, coming out of the climb approaching Laurent, the headwind was particularly strong, and remained pretty strong all the way to Bay.

Solo ride

Sunny at Saratoga Gap
It was going to be a warm, sunny day. I headed out with a windbreaker anyhow because it was still chilly in the shade in the morning. I headed up Hwy 9. There were lots of spores, pollen, and bugs in the air.

At Saratoga Gap, it was warm and sunny. Lots of cyclists passed by. I removed my windbreaker. Finally, I headed back down Hwy 9. A train of Nissan Infinitis passed by. I guess those car owners have a club too.

I took 236 into Big Basin. It was beautiful. It was cool and shaded on the climbs, and warm and sunny on the descents. Comfortable all around. I stopped at the park HQ and took a break and filled my bottle. Then I rolled out on 236.

At the bottom of Jamison, it was 12:18. For some reason, I couldn't go really hard, but that turned out to cause me to pace myself pretty well. I never looked at the 1.33 sign, so I don't know if the skunk tail or the tiny US flag were still there. When I got to the top, it was 12:43, and I matched my personal best of 25:32.

I continued on Empire Grade. It was warm but not too hot all the way home.

Santa Cruz Criterium

I tried entering a race for the first time and lasted 4 laps (out of 11) before getting pulled out. My lungs continued burning for the next 15 minutes. I was at the tail end of the pack for the first lap and the start of the 2nd, then off the back for 2 more before an official directed me off the course. Pulling me out was the right thing to do. I was so burnt from my efforts, I probably would have been a hazard had the pack lapped me.

For the rest of the race, there was one guy off the front early and stayed off the front to win. Probably one of the reasons the pace was pretty high from the outset. The chasing pack had split into two around the 7th or 8th lap. There were also riders off the back. On the 9th or 10th lap, there was also one rider who had fallen off of the lead chase group, but was still ahead of the 2nd group.

Swanton time trial

It was windy on the way out. After Bonny Doon Rd, a Bicycle Trip paceline went by and I hopped on.

There was a headwind starting out. I got passed 3 times on the outbound leg. I recovered a little on the descent, then blew myself out after that. About halfway back, my left calf started cramping up. I managed to finish without getting passed on the return leg. It looks like my time was very close to my previous time of around 35:20-35:30.

I started back with the Bicycle Trip group, but then got dropped on a little climb. A minute later, my front tire started squirming. It was going soft. I rode the rest of the way back carefully, especially when slowing or turning. At least I managed to get home before sunset this time.
