29 June 2013

Solo ride

Since it was going to be a very hot day, I rode along the coast, where it was cooler. I started up Hwy 1, where there was some headwind, but not that much. The speed sign just south of Davenport registered 28-29 mph as I went by. I continued past Davenport and turned right at Swanton and took it the other end, then turned left and headed back on Hwy 1 with a tailwind. I didn't get a reading on the speed sign just north of Davenport, since there was a stream of car traffic pegging it at 46-48 mph. From my GPS data, I was probably going 25-26 mph at that point. Also, I hit around 45 mph on the descent to Scott Creek. While it had been comfortably cool, it was quite warm for the return to Santa Cruz and the final climb up Western.

22 June 2013

Solo ride

It was sunny and cool along the coast. I started up Hwy 1 into a headwind. At Bonny Doon Rd, I headed up. Up in the hills, it was warmer. Opposite Smith Grade, there was an event going on, with orange cones on the road to prevent parking on the road. I continued up Pine Flat, then headed down Empire Grade.

15 June 2013

Solo ride

It was sunny and cool. It had been overcast earlier, so I waited until the sun came out. There was a lot of university traffic, due to the end of term and graduation ceremonies. I headed up Hwy 9 to Felton, then started up Felton-Empire. The lower half, until just after Krazy Acres Lane, was newly rechipped and was rough, with gravel accumulating on the right side of the road. Afterwards, the road was smooth and fairly new. At Empire Grade, I turned left and headed down. The red light at the lane closure on the descent was unfavorable, and I had to stop for about a minute. Fortunately, the light at Heller was green and, unusually, there wasn't any approaching cross traffic.

Solo ride

It was a warm, sunny day. I headed up Hwy 9, Glen Arbor, and Hwy 9 to Boulder Creek, then took Hwy 236. I started up Jamison Creek at 12:10 and got to the top at 12:36 for a time of about 26:07. I turned left and headed down Empire Grade.
