27 July 2013

Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge Workers Ride

I started early and it was foggy with drizzle in the air. I got to the start a little late, but got signed in, then started up Bean Creek, Glenwood, Mountain Charlie, and Riva Ridge. Then, I took Summit, Bear Creek, and Skyline. At Hwy 9, I turned left and headed down, then took Hwy 236 through Big Basin. I started up Jamison Creek at 11:15 and got to the top at 11:41 for a time of about 25:42. Since the ride was supported, I stopped for about 35 minutes on Empire Grade for food and drink, then headed down Empire Grade and back home.

Solo ride

It was cool and overcast as I started up Hwy 9. While taking Glen Arbor to Ben Lomond, the sun came out. I continued up Hwy 9 through Brookdale to Boulder Creek and turned left onto Hwy 236. I started up Jamison Creek at 12:15 and got to the top around 12:40 for an approximate time of 24:25, the first time in 2013 under 25 minutes. At the top, I turned left and headed down Empire Grade.

4 July 2013

Solo ride

It was sunny and warm, with a breeze from the south. I headed up Hwy 9 to Felton, then took Graham Hill, East Zayante, up and over Quail Hollow, and down Glen Arbor to Ben Lomond and back to Hwy 9. I started up Hwy 9 at 10:52. It was warm enough in the sun that the shade was refreshing. There were signs indicating a lane closure part way up, but there wasn't anything going on on the holiday. Above the portion with the lane closure, there was loose gravel on the road. At Alba School, there was a small gathering, probably for some Independence Day celebration. I got to the top at 11:27 for an approximate time of 34:24, then headed down Empire Grade.
